a new, innovative ensemble
The Amnis Piano Quartet was happy to win the bronze medal at the 50th Annual Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition.
Yale University's Vista Chamber Music Series, where Amnis presented spoken program notes and performed Dvorak's second piano quartet.
The Amnis Piano Quartet is a U.S.-based ensemble comprised of violinist Minkyung Lee, violist Matthew McDowell, cellist Jenny Bahk, and pianist Linda Lee.
Amnis formed out of the shared idea of making a permanent piano quartet inspired by the major, established string quartets. Since performances of piano quartet are usually formed on a short-term basis, Amnis is differentiated by a synergy that can only be attained through the dedication required of high level ensembleship.
Recent competition wins include bronze medal at the 50th Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, third prize at the Premio Renzo Guibergia Prize Competition (IT), prizes at the Yellow Springs Chamber Competition, the Oneppo Series Chamber Competition, semi-finalists at the 2024 CAG competition, and being selected as finalists at the recent Coltman Competition. They have concertized across the United States and performed with major chamber artists as part of the Great Lakes Festival, where they are an ensemble-in-residence [Shouse Institute].
The quartet began collaborating together under the tutelage of Ettore Causa during their graduate studies at the Yale School of Music and have worked extensively with Wei-yi Yang, Paul Watkins, Boris Berman, Tai Murray, and the Horszowski Trio. The individual members hold degrees from Seoul National University, Colburn Academy, the Juilliard School, the International Menuhin Music Academy (Switzerland), and Yale University.
Based on our cultural backgrounds, we have made it our goal to highlight underrepresented pieces, specifically by female composers from Korea and the US. Utilizing our connections at Seoul National University, we’ve been performing and commissioning pieces by composers like Jee Soo Shin, Seunghye Bae, and Jae-Hyung Jung. We hope to increase the awareness and popularity of these and other undiscovered works.
